Deaf Guy Adopts A Deaf Pup And Teaches Him Sign Language

  All shelter dogs deserve a loving home. No more so than special needs dogs. Sadly, these dogs are often harder to place. Such was the case with this tiny black lab mix that found himself sick and living in a shelter at only a month and a half old.

This is a heartwarming story about how a puppy, who beat the odds by fighting for his life, ended up being rescued by the most perfect person.

The young pup was living in a Florida shelter suffering from the deadly parvo virus and seizures. His prognosis was bleak but that didn’t stop a rescue and foster organization called NFR Maine from trying to save his life. They took in the little pup and moved him north, hoping to cure him and find him a forever home.

Once in Maine, NFR Maine learned the little guy had another problem-after a visit to their vet, they discovered that the dog was also hearing impaired.  The vet could not say if the pup was born with the problem or acquired it during his illness, but it would be another hurdle the tough little dog would have to cross as they tried to place him in the perfect home.

NFR Maine shared the 2-week-old puppy on social media and hoped for the best.  They knew the now happy puppy would make a great pet for the right person. And, the exact right person came forward!

Nick Abbott, 31 of Maine, was born deaf. He knew he would understand the dog’s special needs and be able to give the pup a great life. He quickly filled out the adoption paperwork and within 24 hours, had himself a new best friend whom he named Emerson.

When Emerson and Nick met, they shared an instant connection. Nick immediately began to teach the puppy simple sign language. The two have no trouble communicating and Emerson began to trust Nick completely. The two are adorable and every time Nick touches Emerson’s earlobe, he barks!

Emerson and Nick are very happy and lucky to have found each other. We are thankful to NFR Maine for rescuing Emerson from the shelter and giving him a chance at finding love in the arms of his new owner.
